Pet care includes the overall well-being of pets through provision of food, regular visits to the vet, and dog walking among many other facilities. Over the years, pet care has transformed into an industry, actively thriving in many countries, more so in some. The evolution of the pet care industry can be owed to multiple factors. These include rising awareness about animal health, growing compassion towards animals, health benefits of having pets, and so on.
An insight into pet care facilities
Pet care facilities include pet products and services like pet food and pet-sitting. Pet food is distributed by various companies such as Mars Petcare Inc. (USA), Unicharm Corp. (Japan), and Deuerer (Germany) among many others. Pet products also comprise health and hygiene products such as shampoos, lotions, medicines and tonics. Pet-sitting is an emerging backup for pet owners planning to go out of town temporarily. Pet grooming salons, dog-walkers, kennels, and pet-friendly restaurants have also been growing exponentially worldwide.
Pet care industry in various countries
The USA and UK have been the centers of the pet care industry since a long time. As per the 2017-2018 National Pet Owners Survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association, 68% of households in the USA have a pet. The Pet Population report of 2017 by the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association stated that 44% of the households in the UK have a pet. In 2016, the spending on pets in both the countries stood at $62.75 billion, and approximately £7.98 million respectively. With trends such as these, the USA & UK continue to lead in terms of the thriving pet industry.
Various other countries such as China, India, and Russia have recently witnessed the expansive growth of the pet care industry. China’s pet care industry started growing since the 2000’s with the dog licensing fees being lowered, and the low birth rate contributing to more pets being adopted.
India’s pet care market expanded only recently, with a surge in multiple pet care services. These services include pet grooming salons and pet spas, pet magazines, pet behaviorists, pet-friendly restaurants, and so on. Virbac Animal Health Pvt. Ltd. is one of the key pet product players in the country.
Russia found its opportunity of expansion in 2011 when Nestle announced an investment of a whopping $48 million into its Vorsino pet food factory. The aim of this was to double the wet food production in the next three years. Russia’s enrollment into the world pet trade show industry with the ParkZoo show also contributed to the country’s intensifying pet care industry.
Brazil, Japan, and Vietnam are some of the other upcoming pet care markets of the world. The industry is expected to continue growing all over the world, which is a reflection of people’s increasing love for their furry friends.
