The newest pair of adorable animal amigos comes to us from Duluth, Georgia, and it truly does not get any more heart-warming than this: a two-legged Chihuahua named Roo and a silkie chicken named Penny (yes, that cotton ball with a beak is actually a chicken), are best friends.
Before her rescue, Penny had outlived her usefulness as an experimental chicken in a lab, and was going to be put down. However, thanks to the efforts of Alicia Williams, a worker at the Duluth Animal Hospital, this powder puff bird was saved and given the opportunity to make a friendship of a lifetime.
Roo, who was found by the side of the road, is believed to have been a cast aside product of puppy mill breeding, abandoned because of his deformity. And while this dog may be down two legs, he is doing just fine in the friend department thanks to Alicia Williams and her chicken Penny.
Roo’s condition made mobility a real challenge, but thanks to the help of people at the hospital, he now has some heavy duty wheels that allow him to plow through even the roughest terrain. And while he wasn’t too fond of being strapped into his new chariot in the beginning, thanks to Penny (and no small amount of treats) Roo is finally starting to feel comfortable in his wheels, although “he runs over [Penny] sometimes because he doesn’t realize how big his wheels are,” says Williams.
The pair are almost inseparable, and they are starting to gain a real following. People booking appointments at the Duluth Animal Hospital will wait for an available slot when Williams and her dynamic duo are around.
“Penny gets excited when Roo is around because she knows he’s got treats and food all of the time. Whenever she hears him being fed, she steals his food. He loves snuggling with her because that’s his big teddy bear,” says Williams.
